What Is MediShield Life?

MediShield Life is a basic health insurance scheme administered by the CPF Board for all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. It provides protection against large hospitalisation bills and selected outpatient treatments. Premiums are payable from your Medisave account. It has been mandatory for all Citizens and PRs since 2015.

What MediShield Life Covers

MediShield Life covers subsidised inpatient treatment in Class B2 and C wards, day surgeries, and certain outpatient treatments including chemotherapy, dialysis, and immunosuppressants. It has a deductible (the amount you pay first before MediShield kicks in) and co-insurance (a percentage you pay on the remaining bill). Both are subject to annual limits.

Integrated Shield Plans

Most Singaporeans supplement MediShield Life with an Integrated Shield Plan from a private insurer (AIA, Aviva, AXA, Great Eastern, NTUC Income, or Prudential). An IP extends coverage to private hospitals or Class A or B1 wards and typically reduces deductibles and co-insurance. IP premiums are partly payable from Medisave up to age-based limits.

MediSave Contribution and Limits

MediShield Life premiums are deducted automatically from your Medisave account. For most working Singaporeans the premiums are covered by Medisave contributions without requiring cash. Additional MediSave withdrawals apply for IP premiums up to the Additional Withdrawal Limits by age.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. MediShield Life is mandatory for all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. Premiums are automatically deducted from your Medisave account.

Can I pay MediShield Life premiums from Medisave?

Yes. MediShield Life premiums are payable entirely from your Medisave account. You do not need to pay cash for MediShield Life premiums.

What is the difference between MediShield Life and an Integrated Shield Plan?

MediShield Life is the basic mandatory scheme covering subsidised treatment in Class B2 and C wards. An Integrated Shield Plan is an optional add-on from a private insurer that extends coverage to private hospitals or higher ward classes and typically reduces deductibles and co-insurance. IP premiums are partly payable from Medisave up to age-based limits.

Does MediShield Life cover outpatient treatment?

MediShield Life covers a limited range of outpatient treatments including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, dialysis, and certain immunosuppressants. General outpatient GP and specialist consultations are not covered by MediShield Life.

How are MediShield Life premiums calculated?

Premiums increase with age and are set by the CPF Board. They are the same for all Citizens and for PRs in their third year and beyond. PRs in their first two years pay a small loading. Premium subsidies are available for lower-income households. Use the calculator above to estimate your annual premium by age.
